Childhood

A sailor, even at age 4 1/2.
At age 6, with maternal grandparents.
Bugle in hand, at age 12.
At age 15, with Tex.

I guess this is a little late, but I just found out about this now. I feel so sad, Barkelew was an awesome guy, a part of history, and definitely one of the greatest teachers, sub or not, of any kind that I've ever had. He always had something nice to say and tried to look for the best in even the worst people. He talked about taking care of yourself and others, about how he tries to learn something new every day. I remember kids giving him high 5's in the halls and the delight on his face he would get when talking about his past and his family.
I remember once he brought in a picture of the crew on the Navy ship he was stationed on and asked us to guess which one was him and if we got it right, he'd give us a candy! haha.

This is about a year late, but I just wanted to give my condolences and let you know that a totally random person you've never met really misses him.

Take care.
